Macbook lookalikes are almost as popular as MacBooks themselves these days. Xiaomi’s Mi Notebook Air (a MacBook Air lookalike) from last year is an incredibly popular laptop in Xiaomi’s home country, China. This year, instead of taking on Apple’s aging MacBook Air, Xiaomi is releasing a direct competitor to the MacBook Pro and it looks incredible!
The new Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro features a design vastly reminiscent of the 2017 MacBook Pro 15 inch. To the untrained eye, you might actually think it is a MacBook Pro, but there’s a noticeable exterior difference. The Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro has a greater array of ports, comprising of two regular USB ports, two USB-C ports, 3 in 1 SD card slot reader, Full-sized HDMI port, and a headphone jack. Oh, and it also includes a fingerprint sensor which is a nice bonus.
The Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro’s port selection is definitely more vast than what the MacBook Pro has to offer. Four Thunderbolt 3 ports and a headphones jack are all you get on MacBook Pro. Thunderbolt 3 does offer all of the same functionality as the Mi Notebook Pro’s port selection, but only if you purchase pricey dongles.
Internally you’re also getting pretty decent specs, a latest Intel quad-core i7 CPU, up to a 1TB SSD, up to 16GB of RAM, and Nvidia’s Geforce Mx150 GPU.
The Geforce MX150 is an excellent inclusion; it significantly bests the standard integrated graphics that comes with Intel’s i7 chips. Technically the Geforce MX150 does allow for some decent gaming performance, games such as Overwatch and Counter Strike will run reasonably well. More demanding titles such as The Witcher 3 and GTA V will have to have their graphics settings turned down a notch or two.
The Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro sounds like an excellent MacBook Pro alternative, but what’s the catch? Firstly, the screen is a 16:9 1920 x 1080 resolution panel which doesn’t compare to the MacBook Pro’s 16:10 2880 x 1800 resolution display. Secondly, the Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro is only available in China at launch and most likely will not make its way to North America or Europe. This means that if you want one, you’ll have to get it imported, which makes getting it repaired challenging if something goes wrong. And finally, people don’t always buy Mac’s for the design or hardware; Mac OS is a big selling factor. The Xiaomi Notebook Mi Pro runs Windows 10 which could be a deal breaker potential buyers.
Overall, the Xiaomi Mi Notebook Pro is a very impressive and well-rounded laptop. Premium design with a quality metal construction and solid internals makes it an enticing laptop. Especially when it costs just 6399 Chinese yuan (980 US Dollars), that’s significantly cheaper than buying a MacBook Pro. If the downsides mentioned above don’t bother you, this could be the laptop for you.
